Over the past decade, you may have heard some of the reports citing conventional cotton farming as one of agriculture’s most environmentally destructive activities. The simple act of growing and harvesting the one pound of cotton fiber needed to make a T-shirt takes an enormous toll on the air, water, and soil, not to mention the health, of people living and working in the country where cotton is grown. In fact, cotton crops are the second largest user of agricultural pesticides in the world (coffee is the first and tobacco the third). 25% of the world's insecticides and more than 10% of the world's pesticides are used on cotton, with 50 million pounds applied yearly in the United States. According to a 1997 study by the International Labor Organization, 14% of all occupational injuries in the agricultural sector, and 10% of all fatal injuries can be attributed to pesticides. Organically grown cotton eliminates these harmful chemicals and is certified by independent third parties and some state agencies to ensure that no synthetic substances were used in the cultivation and harvesting of the fibers.
